Max Greyserman & Andrea Lee

Q.  Here with Max and Andrea after the second round today. Just talk about what went well out there for you both from each of your perspectives.

MAX GREYSERMAN:  Yeah, I thought we just mixed well as a team in this format. She hits every fairway, she hits it really straight with her iron play especially, so we try to make it to where  I’m a good putter, so try to make it where I was getting the putter in my hand the most and she would hit more of the approaches. You can do that a little bit if you tee off on a certain hole. That was the strategy today and that’s what we did.

ANDREA LEE:  Yeah, I think we played just really solid golf overall. Max’s short game is incredible. I knew that even if I missed the green a little bit, he would give me an upanddown look within like five, six feet. Yeah, I think we just hamandegged it pretty well. He putted great and hit some good shots out there. Yeah, some great momentum going into tomorrow.

Q.  And how did this pairing come about?

MAX GREYSERMAN:  Billy Horschel pulled out and I got the invite to come in, yeah.

Yeah, I was excited when I saw it. She went to Stanford, my brother plays golf at Stanford, so a little bit of a connection there.

Any chance I can get to play with someone that hits it this straight, I’m going to do that. It kind of reminds me of the Zurich Classic, you know, me playing with Nico back when we played in April and that’s the same format essentially. So similar types of games too with her, but she hits it way straighter than him. It’s just a fun format so I was excited to come play when I got the opportunity.

Q.  So did you guys just meet on Tuesday, was it?

MAX GREYSERMAN:  Yeah, yeah.

ANDREA LEE:  Wednesday, I think.

MAX GREYSERMAN:  And like barely.

ANDREA LEE:  For like a minute.

MAX GREYSERMAN:  Basically just got on the first tee. I was actually really sick last week end so I was almost not going to play. I was supposed to come play a practice round and maybe hang out and meet her. I said like one word to her Wednesday and basically just met her on the tee in the first round.

ANDREA LEE:  Beware the sick golfer. He’s not sick anymore, but he still played great.

Q.  Max, how much experience do you have watching the LPGA’s players’ games and what have you been impressed with so far?

MAX GREYSERMAN:  I watch LPGA now and then. I used to watch a lot of golf so I used to watch LPGA, but just not as much anymore now that I’m kind of playing during that time.

But obviously what impressed me the most is how straight and how accurate they hit it, especially distance control as well. Something that I wish to have even half that accuracy. Like she literally doesn’t miss a fairway, it’s crazy. Yeah, that and I miss a lot of fairways.

Q.  What’s been the strategy with the golf ball? I know like typically when you have two people that play with the same company, maybe play with similar balls, that helps. But has there been a lot of strategy with the ball or do you all play a similar ball?

ANDREA LEE:  It hasn’t been too difficult since we both play a Callaway ball. His is a little bit less spinnier than mine so it actually helps when I hit the tee shot with his ball so that he could hit the approach shot into the green. I get a little bit more distance off the tee so he can hit maybe a little bit less club. So it actually wasn’t that difficult of a change.

Q.  Do you think it’s an advantage just to be able to play a similar style of ball?

MAX GREYSERMAN:  Maybe. I don’t know.

ANDREA LEE:  I think so. Last year Billy played a really spinny ball and it was like going up in the air, like uh, this is going to be a really long shot for you.

MAX GREYSERMAN:  It’s nice we both play Callaway so the reps, you know, told us exactly what her ball does, what my ball does so we can get ready for that. Basically, her ball spins pretty much the same off the tee, mine’s a little less, and then her ball spins way more on the approaches. So we were just trying to get today for the approaches, have her hit her shot in the fairway. I think that’s what a lot of people are doing is off the tee it doesn’t matter as much, it’s getting your ball on your approach shot is kind of key.

Q.  What’s something you guys have both learned about each other since teaming up for this?

MAX GREYSERMAN:  That’s a good question.

ANDREA LEE:  That’s a great question. Max has great hands, I want to just take his short game and put it into my golf bag or golf game.

I’ve just learned so much just watching him plot his way around the golf course, around the greens, how he reads his putts. I’m learning a lot.

And I think that’s a really great thing about this tournament is that we get to watch some of the PGA guys up close, learn from them, take the good things out of their games and try to implement them to ours. Just to see how far they hit the ball as well is pretty cool.

MAX GREYSERMAN:  I think you get to appreciate what the LPGA players do well and what the PGA TOUR players do well. We’re playing the same game, but it’s two unique different styles. The PGA is more of the bombandgouge type of game these days and the LPGA is still kind of the oldschool like you’ve got to hit fairways, you’ve got to hit greens, you’ve got to give yourself a lot of looks. You’ve got to appreciate the way you can play the game differently and still shoot a really low score either way.

Q.  Last question. You guys moved up a good bit with this round today in alternate shot. Any thoughts heading into tomorrow’s round? Any conversation I guess on strategy for tomorrow yet?

MAX GREYSERMAN:  Best ball, I like best ball. So I think people get caught up in the best ball trying to be more aggressive, but I play the same game and you try to both have birdie looks on every hole and you just roll the putts in. We’re going to try to make a lot of birdies tomorrow and move up the leaderboard as fast as we can.

ANDREA LEE:  Just really excited. I feel like today was definitely a momentum boost for us. We started off a little bit slow yesterday in the scramble.

MAX GREYSERMAN:  About as slow as you possibly can.

ANDREA LEE:  Yeah, like snail like. Yeah, I think we found some confidence today and just a lot of momentum going into tomorrow. I think we’re just really excited to hopefully go low.
